Crisp Fall Days and Autumn Poetry

These photos are linked up to Saturday Snapshot, a super fun meme hosted by Alyce at At Home With Books. Head on over and check out some great photos!

The leaves in our part of the state are just beginning
to turn to shades of amber, russet, and gold.

The Autumn
by Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Go, sit upon the lofty hill,
And turn your eyes around,
Where waving woods and waters wild
Do hymn and autumn sound.
The summer sun is faint on them --
The summer flowers depart --
Sit still -- as all transform'd to stone,
Except your musing heart.

How there you sat in summer-time,
May yet be in your mind;
And how you heard the green woods sing
Beneath the freshening wind.
Though the same wind now blows around,
You would its blast recall;
For every breath that stirs the trees,
Doth cause a leaf to fall.

Oh! like that wind, is all the mirth

That flesh and dust impart:
We cannot bear its visitings,

When change is on the heart.
Gay words and jests may make us smile,
When Sorrow is asleep;
But other things must make us smile,
When Sorrow bids us weep!

The dearest hands that clasp our hands, --
Their presence may be o'er;
The dearest voice that meets our ear,
That tone may come no more!
Youth fades; and then, the joys of youth,
Which one refresh'd our mind,
Shall come -- as, on those sighing woods,
The chilling autumn wind.

Hear not the wind -- view not the woods;
Look out o'er vale and hill-
In spring, the sky encircled them --
The sky is round them still.
Come autumn's scathe -- come winter's cold --
Come change -- and human fate!
Whatever prospect Heaven doth bound,
Can ne'er be desolate.

I hope everyone is having lovely fall weather and enjoying the new season.
Happy Reading!

  1. The best time of year, no question about it :)

  2. I just stopped by to say thank you - I got the book I won in the mail already. I was so surprised - and happy - to get the little extras like the memo pads and the book mark too. So much fun! Thanks again Rebecca. BY THE WAY - gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous shots. We haven't had much fall here in Southern California yet and when we do it will never, ever look like these pictures.

  3. The leaves and the poem are perfect for this autumn day in Ohio. Thanks. Here's Mine

  4. You couldn't have chosen a more apt poem to accompany your snapshots!! Happy Fall!

  5. Beautiful pictures, and the poem was a perfect choice. My Snapshot is at

  6. Great shots...and I love the poem. I adore fall and need to get out there, taking walks and capturing photos.

  7. Lovely foliage and poetry. Thanks for sharing your Autumn.

  8. Lovely fall pictures! This is my favorite time of the year for photos... beautiful colors and perfect lighting. Now if only we could skip winter and go directly to spring!

  9. Our leaves are just beginning to change too. As long as it doesn't rain for a few more weeks we may actually get some vibrant colors around here (usually the rain comes and the leaves get brown and yucky). Love the leaf photos!

  10. I love the fall colors. Autumn is my favorite time of year. I was afraid that with the drought we'd only have brown leaves this year. It's been nice to be proved wrong and to see the reds and oranges coming out.

    Here's my Snapshot.

  11. Lovely poem....the trees here are beginning to throw down their leafy confetti and wind down into the bare November squalls♫

  12. So many beautiful colors--I'm still waiting for most trees in my area to change.

  13. Lovely photos, just the opposite of my spring time photos this week.

  14. Lovely choice of poem to go with your pics.
